Striping in Rain: Why Oregon Weather Requires Careful Scheduling

The Short Answer: Do Not Stripe in Rain

Parking lot striping cannot be performed in rain. This is not a preference or a best practice — it is a hard requirement. Paint applied to wet pavement will not adhere properly, will not cure correctly, and will fail within weeks or days rather than lasting the expected 1 to 3 years. No reputable contractor will apply striping to a wet surface, and any contractor who offers to "work through a little rain" is either inexperienced or does not stand behind their work.

For property owners in Oregon, where rain is a defining feature of the climate for eight months of the year, understanding the weather requirements for striping is essential for project planning and scheduling.

Why Rain Ruins Striping

Adhesion Failure

Traffic paint bonds to pavement through a combination of chemical affinity and mechanical interlock with the surface texture. Water on the pavement surface creates a barrier between the paint and the pavement. The paint bonds to the water film rather than the pavement. When the water eventually evaporates, the paint has no bond to the surface and peels away in sheets.

Cure Disruption

Water-based latex paint cures by evaporation — water leaves the paint film and the acrylic particles fuse together. Rain falling on uncured latex paint adds water back into the film, preventing the fusion process. The result is a paint film that never achieves full hardness or adhesion.

Solvent-based alkyd paint cures through oxidation — a chemical reaction with oxygen in the air. Rain does not directly interfere with this chemical process, but it prevents the initial solvent evaporation that must occur before curing begins. Rain on uncured alkyd paint washes the solvent layer away unevenly, creating a mottled, poorly bonded film.

Thermoplastic sets by cooling rather than drying, so rain during application is less catastrophic. However, wet pavement prevents proper bonding, and cold rain can cause thermal shock that creates micro-fractures in the hot material.

Visual Contamination

Rain splashing on wet paint creates visible surface defects — splash marks, runs, puddle rings, and uneven texture. Even if the paint eventually dries and bonds (which is unlikely), the visual quality is permanently compromised.

Oregon's Weather Requirements for Striping

Temperature

Pavement temperature must be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit for all paint types. Below this threshold, paint dries too slowly (latex) or cures incompletely (alkyd). In Oregon, this temperature threshold eliminates most of November through February for outdoor striping, though mid-winter dry spells in the 50s occasionally create brief windows.

Precipitation

No rain should be falling during application and no rain should be forecast for at least 24 hours after application. For thermoplastic, the dry window can be shortened to 2 to 4 hours since it sets by cooling rather than drying. For water-based latex paint, a 24 to 48-hour dry window is ideal.

Humidity

Relative humidity should be below 85 percent during application. High humidity slows drying time for all paint types. In Oregon's wet season, humidity frequently exceeds 85 percent even during dry periods between rain events.

Dew

Morning dew on the pavement surface is functionally equivalent to rain for adhesion purposes. The surface must be dew-free before application begins. In Oregon, dew often persists until 9 to 11 AM during spring and fall months, which delays morning start times.

Oregon's Practical Striping Season

Given these weather requirements, Oregon's practical parking lot striping season varies by region.

Willamette Valley (Portland, Salem, Eugene): Late May through mid-October offers the most reliable dry windows. June through September is the prime season with the lowest risk of rain delays. April, May, October, and early November offer sporadic windows.

Southern Oregon (Medford, Grants Pass): Late April through late October. Southern Oregon has a drier climate with more predictable dry periods, extending the season slightly.

Central Oregon (Bend, Redmond): May through October. Lower humidity and less rainfall than western Oregon, but cooler overnight temperatures in spring and fall can delay morning starts.

Oregon Coast: June through September only. Coastal fog and moisture create challenging conditions even during summer. The coast has the shortest reliable striping season in the state.

Eastern Oregon: May through October. Drier than western Oregon with more predictable weather, but extreme temperatures in summer (over 100 degrees) can make midday application problematic for some materials.

How to Plan Around Oregon's Weather

Book Early

Oregon's striping season is compressed compared to drier states. Every property owner with a lot that needs striping is competing for contractor time during the same May-through-September window. Book your project at least 4 to 8 weeks in advance during peak season. For a complete overview of project planning, see our complete striping guide.

Build in Weather Flex

Include weather contingency language in your contract. A professional contractor will specify that the project will be completed during the next available dry window if weather delays the scheduled date. Avoid contracts that lock in a single date with no weather flexibility.

Coordinate With Sealcoating

If your lot also needs sealcoating, the weather requirements stack. Sealcoating needs the same dry conditions, plus 48 hours of cure time before striping can begin. This means a combined sealcoating and striping package requires a minimum 3 to 4-day dry window. Plan these projects for July and August when multi-day dry stretches are most reliable in western Oregon. See our striping after sealcoat guide for timing details.

Monitor Conditions

Professional contractors monitor weather forecasts closely and communicate proactively about schedule adjustments. If your contractor calls to reschedule due to weather, this is a sign of professionalism, not disorganization.

What If You Need Urgent Striping During the Wet Season?

Occasionally, property owners face situations where striping must be done outside the optimal season — a new construction project with an occupancy deadline, a code enforcement notice requiring immediate compliance, or a lot that was repaved in fall and needs markings before winter.

Covered areas. Parking garage striping can be done year-round since the surface is protected from rain. Epoxy and thermoplastic are the preferred materials for covered applications.

Temporary markings. Fast-drying temporary marking paint can be applied during brief dry windows to provide basic lot organization until permanent striping can be applied in the next dry season.

Thermoplastic in short windows. Because thermoplastic sets by cooling rather than drying, it requires a shorter dry window than paint. An experienced crew can apply thermoplastic during a 4-hour dry window, whereas paint requires 24 hours.
