Speed Hump Maintenance: 2026 Inspection & Repair Guide

A well-built asphalt speed hump runs 7 to 10 years on a parking lot, and 5 to 7 on a residential street, before it needs more than a paint refresh. A rubber hump bolted to asphalt usually goes 5 to 8 years before bolts loosen or rubber sections fatigue. Maintenance is what decides whether you hit the top of those ranges or replace it early. The annual pass extends the quarterly checklist with measurement and documentation.
Place a 10-foot straightedge across the hump perpendicular to traffic. Measure peak height with a tape. Compare against the original install spec (typically 3 to 4 inches per ITE Traffic Calming Manual recommendations). If the hump has lost more than half an inch of crown, the calming effect drops measurably -- replacement is more cost-effective than chasing partial repaves.
Photograph the hump from both approaches and from above (a phone on a selfie stick works). Date-stamp the photos. After 3 years of annuals you have a degradation timeline that justifies the replacement budget request.
Log every crack longer than 6 inches by location. Cracks under a quarter inch wide can be sealed with hot-pour rubberized sealant. Cracks wider than half an inch are structural and indicate base-course failure -- those need a saw-cut and patch, not just sealant. Re-paint when reflectivity drops below 100 mcd/m^2/lux as measured by a retroreflectometer, or when night-time visibility from 100 feet is no longer obvious. Thermoplastic is the better long-term spend even though the upfront cost is 2.5 times higher.
Cracks under a quarter inch wide get a hot-pour rubberized sealant, applied with a melt-and-pour pot. Cracks wider than half an inch get a saw-cut, partial mill, and hot-mix patch -- the same process as the removal patch step but limited to the failed area.
