Concrete flatwork is any flat, horizontal concrete surface — driveways, walkways, patios, slabs, and equipment pads. It is the most common concrete work homeowners and businesses buy, and in Oregon its lifespan is decided less by the concrete and more by the base prep, joints, and reinforcement underneath. Concrete, gravel, and rebar prices track the construction market, and a concrete truck has a minimum charge, so small pads cost more per square foot than big driveways. Most flatwork failures here trace to two causes: a poor base and missing or wrong joints. On Willamette Valley clay, a slab poured on unprepared ground moves with seasonal moisture and cracks randomly. Without control joints at the right spacing, the slab cracks wherever it wants instead of in straight, planned lines. East of the Cascades, freeze-thaw adds surface scaling on top. The fixes are not exotic — a compacted gravel base, the right thickness, proper joints, and (for enclosed slabs) a vapor barrier. Get those right and flatwork lasts decades.
