Bollards serve five primary functions in parking lots and commercial sites:

The standard parking-lot bollard is a 4 to 6-inch diameter Schedule-40 or Schedule-80 steel pipe set 30 to 36 inches into a concrete footing, then filled with concrete and capped. Surface-mount bollards bolt to existing pavement using anchors or epoxy. They install in under an hour but resist far less impact than embedded bollards. Use them where the substrate cannot be cut -- post-tension slabs, structural decks, historic plazas.
Fire-marshal-required fire lanes that double as service drives need bollards that come out. Removable bollards drop into a flush ground sleeve and lock at the base. Retractable bollards telescope down into a sleeve, leaving a flush surface, and may be manual, semi-automatic, or hydraulic.
Crash-rated bollards are tested per ASTM F2656-20, which uses M-ratings (M30, M40, M50) for vehicle weight and speed combinations. The older K-ratings (K4, K8, K12) come from the State Department's SD-STD-02.01, still widely cited in federal specs. A K12 / M50 bollard stops a 15,000-pound vehicle at 50 mph -- engineered for terror-attack mitigation, not parking-lot fender-benders.
